There's something about the Metal Men that seems to bring down whoever they guest-star with to their level. I think they appeared with Batman (No way was he THE Batman in these stories!)in the BRAVE AND BOLD comic something like six times, and, while the stories were always fun (I've a soft spot for #121.), the Caped Crusader seemed less than imperious in their presence. This remains true even with the present-day B&B cartoon series. The Metal Men should always be allowed to be funny, for whenever DC has tried to do the robots "straight," as they did in the "Hunted Metal Men" storyline that essentially killed their first series, it's unacceptable.
I'm convinced it's harder for creators today to do a funny comic book. It's been so long since funny was a valued element in Marvel or DC comics that we might as well be talking bringing back vaudeville here. Outside of the PLASTIC MAN issues of Phil Foglio, Hilary Barta, and Kyle Baker, it's hard to think of recent funny superhero comics. At least INTENTIONALLY funny superhero comics...
