THE GONE&FORGOTTEN ADVENT(ure) CALENDAR: DAY TEN

All New Mystery Adventures of Charlie Chan
Charlie Chan is a book which doubles down on the egregious ethnic stereotyping, particularly in the service of an Asian character typically portrayed on screen by a Caucasian actor. It's a shame that the gorgeous Jack Kirby artwork is overshadowed by the inherent cultural ick.

What's egregious about a Chinese man being a brilliant detective with physical courage and a sense of humor?

It's the same thing as what's blatantly disingenuous about your comment.

If you don't have an answer, you don't have an answer. No need to get personal about it.

Shoo.

Marty McKee is right. Charlie Chan was created as a response to the ethnic stereotypes of the yellow menace, such as Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu.

I'm not - nor was I anywhere - saying that Charlie Chan is inherently without value, I'm saying that this particular comic has doubled down on unfortunate ethnic stereotyping, as observed above. I don't see how that's particularly controversial, given that Charlie Chan's depictions outside of the source material have oftenbeen criticized for insensitivity. Is this the first you folks have heard of this?
